Fall Fireplace Tips & Tricks
Fall is a lovely time of year in Allentown and the Lehigh Valley area. With warm temperatures, clear blue skies, and trees in a festive, colorful mood, it’s almost hard to believe that in a few short weeks, the temperature will fall, and rooftops will be dusted with white powder. However, here in eastern Pennsylvania, where we get nearly three feet of snow, it’s time to think about your chimney and fireplace. Just follow our handy tips & tricks to ensure your fireplace will be ready to keep you warm and cozy all winter.
Start with a Visual Inspection
Take a moment to inspect your fireplace and chimney visually. Look for any visible cracks, gaps, or signs of water damage. Is the damper working properly? Do you see rust or an oily or tar-like coating? Also, check the chimney crown and cap for any rust or damage, but only if you can do it safely. Share your findings with your certified chimney sweep when they arrive for your annual inspection.
Clean Out Old Ashes and Debris
If you have a wood-burning fireplace, clear out any ashes from last season. This not only ensures a cleaner start but also improves the fireplace’s heating efficiency. For gas fireplaces: clean the burners of any dust or debris to prevent clogged ports. Rusted parts should be replaced.
Trim Trees and Branches
Overgrown branches near your roof and chimney are a fire hazard. They also act like a “bridge” for critters that want to move in and build nests inside the chimney. Trim back any trees that have grown too close to prevent falling limbs from damaging your chimney or causing a dangerous flue obstruction.
Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Safety is always our top priority. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are in working order. Fall is also an excellent time to replace their batteries.
Schedule a Professional Inspection and Cleaning
While a visual inspection is a great starting point, a professional is best equipped to identify potential issues. A certified chimney sweep will also perform a thorough cleaning, removing creosote buildup and other debris that can ignite a fire.
Source Seasoned Firewood
Make sure you have an ample supply of seasoned firewood. Seasoned wood has been dried for at least six months to a year, which burns hotter and more completely, with less smoke and creosote. Oak, ash, maple, and cherry are popular local choices. Many suppliers also offer mixed hardwoods.
Consider Fireplace Upgrades
If you have an older masonry fireplace, you might consider installing an insert. Fireplace inserts dramatically increase the efficiency of your fireplace, helping to keep your home warmer while using less fuel. They are also an economical way to convert your hearth from one fuel source to another.

Treat Yourself to a Warm & Cozy Experience
Now that your fireplace and chimney are ready for the fall and winter seasons, you can treat yourself to the crackling sound of firewood, the soothing flames, and a pleasant aroma.
