In preparation for winter, it’s important to look for cracks or hidden damage in your home’s foundation, roof, and chimney, which could lead to much more serious damage once the temperature drops below freezing and especially when snow and ice storms arrive.

In particular, a cracked chimney can lead to extensive damage to your roof or even the home’s interior, and can ultimately increase the risk of a house fire. If the raised lid above the chimney is cracked, water can enter and rust a metal chimney over time, or crack the bricks of a brick chimney as the water freezes and expands throughout the winter months.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends having a certified chimney sweep inspect for damage or leaks once a year, to protect your home and family.
