Is Your Chimney Crown Cracked Or Damaged?
One of the most essential elements of a chimney is the crown. When properly constructed, this masonry surface at the chimney top deflects rain and snow away from the structure. However, cracks or other damage to the crown allow rain and snow to leak into the chimney, where it can cause considerable water damage to the interior brick or stone walls and components, such as the liner and damper. Just looking at the top of the stack from the ground, it is difficult to tell the condition of the crown, and climbing onto the roof is dangerous.
Here are some of the signs to look for that indicate your chimney crown is cracked or damaged:
Visible Cracks
The most indicative sign is the presence of cracks on the surface of the crown. These can be hairline cracks or larger, more noticeable fissures. In addition to water leaks, pests and rodents can also find their way into your chimney and home through these tiny cracks.
Rust Stains
Rust-colored or reddish-brown stains on the exterior masonry, especially just below the crown, are not only unsightly but are often an indication of a cracked crown. Corrosion from rust stains can also accelerate the deterioration of the brickwork.
Spalling or Flaking Brick
Water entering through a damaged crown can cause the masonry below to absorb moisture. During our freeze-thaw cycles in the winter, this can lead to the brick faces flaking, peeling, or popping off, a destructive process known as spalling. Without repair, the chimney will continue to weaken and could eventually collapse.
Water in the Fireplace
In more severe cases, a damaged chimney crown can lead to water leaking down the inside of the chimney, potentially causing water stains on the walls of your home, the fireplace, or even the ceiling around the chimney. Although the leak could be due to another component, such as a flashing failure, any water leaks or stains mean that an immediate call to schedule a chimney inspection is critically important to prevent further damage. In the meantime, it is advisable to avoid using the attached heating appliances until your chimney sweep professional advises it is ok to do so.
Damaged Chimney Liner
Water leaking through a cracked or damaged crown can also crack your chimney liner. When this occurs, you may notice clay or mortar flakes in your fireplace. More importantly, this damage weakens the liner’s ability to protect your home from fire and carbon monoxide.
How to Prevent Damage to Your Chimney Crown
The best way to protect your chimney and crown is to stay current with your annual chimney inspections. It is not worth skipping an inspection to save a couple of hundred bucks when it can lead to damage that could cost hundreds of dollars, if not thousands, in repairs. Regular inspections are the key to identifying crown issues early. So, if you suspect your chimney crown is cracked or damaged, it is critical to schedule a chimney inspection as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the stack and your home.
